Shami Chakrabarti CBE

On Thursday 21 April, Shami Chakrabarti CBE addressed the Nehru and Palmerston Societies.

Former Director of the UK's leading civil liberties and human rights groups, Liberty, Ms Chakrabarti was also a member of the Leveson Inquiry on phone hacking. She is one of the most politically influential women in the UK.

Ms Chakrabarti's visit was preceded by Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green Party, who came to speak to the Palmerston Society on Tuesday 19 April. Ms Bennett became leader of the Green Party in 2012 and her party won 3.8% of the popular vote in the 2015 General Election. 

Harrow's Palmerston Society is named after the fifth of Harrow's seven Prime Ministers, Henry Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (Dr Bromley’s 1795²). It is run by Sixth Form boys and regularly hosts politicians, political commentators and members of the House of Lords. 

Nehru Society is named after Jawaharlal Nehru (The Head Master’s 1905³), Old Harrovian and first Prime Minister of India. It fosters understanding of the culture, politics and society of the Indian sub-continent, meeting for films, lectures, visits, meals and cultural events.
