House plays

February saw the last in this year’s series of House Plays in the Ryan Theatre. Elmfield performed a stylish, soulful Brief Encounter, whilst The Knoll’s A Matter of Life and Death was vibrant, witty and full of the quirky humour for which the original film is famous. Earlier in the term The Head Master’s gave us a bold, contemporary reworking of Marlowe’s Dr Faustus, whilst West Acre presented Ernest and the Pale Moon – a haunting gothic tale of obsession and madness. In the Autumn, Bradbys and The Park began the theatrical year in style with their joint production of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus, full of poise and invention. Despite the huge variety in style, dynamic ensemble work, innovative physicality and striking aesthetics have been consistent hallmarks of this year’s House Plays. Under the guidance of the Drama Department’s production staff, boys have created original soundscapes and musical scores, realised atmospheric lighting designs, and helped to construct ambitious set pieces. Collaborating with visiting professional practitioners including choreographers and make-up artists in addition to beak directors, the six houses have presented a bold, challenging and ambitious season of work. Bravo to all involved!
