Founder's Obit Commemorations

October is a special month for Harrovians as the Founder's Obit is celebrated and a wreath is laid on John Lyon's tomb.

Every year, members of the School community join with the John Lyon School to reflect on the generosity of those who have made the Foundation Family what it is today.

The School was founded in 1572 by John Lyon of Preston who was granted a Charter by Queen Elizabeth I for the foundation of a School for the "Godliness and Good Learning" of local scholars at Harrow on the Hill. The commemorative event also remembers his wife, Joan Lyon, who oversaw the building of The School House.

We celebrate John Lyon’s Charity and also the generosity of those whose legacies have enriched our buildings, land, bursaries, scholarships and prizes.

The event was marked this year with a Commemoration Concert in Speech Room and an Evensong in St Mary's. In 2022, Harrow School will be celebrating the 450th anniversary of its foundation with a year of events to mark the occasion.
