Preparing for September
The summer before joining Harrow is a special time for both boys and their families. Securing a place at Harrow is a significant achievement and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. As September approaches, it is natural for boys – and parents – to feel a mixture of anticipation, pride and perhaps a few nerves. Rest assured, every new Harrovian arrives with questions and uncertainties, and the School's extensive pastoral support and strong House communities are designed to help boys settle quickly and happily into life on the Hill. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for September together.

For New Boys
1. Start getting to know your new School
You are about to become part of a remarkable community with a rich history and traditions stretching back more than 450 years. Spend some time over the summer reading the welcome materials and becoming familiar with Harrow life. You do not need to remember everything immediately – much of it will soon become second nature once you arrive.
2. Make your room feel like home
Your House will quickly become your second home. Bringing photographs, favourite bedding and a few familiar possessions can help make your room feel welcoming and personal from the very first day. Many boys are surprised by just how quickly their House begins to feel like home.
3. Practise a little independence
The more independent you become over the summer, the more confident you will feel in September. Simple routines such as making your bed, organising your belongings and managing your own timetable will help you settle into boarding life with ease.
4. Arrive ready to embrace opportunities
One of the greatest joys of Harrow is the extraordinary breadth of opportunities available. Whether in sport, music, drama, art, societies or service, come prepared to try new things. Some of the activities boys enjoy most are those they had never previously considered.
5. Remember that everyone is new once
Feeling apprehensive before arriving is completely normal. Every boy joining Harrow will be experiencing similar emotions. Be yourself, ask questions and throw yourself into House life – you will soon discover that older boys, House staff and new friends are all keen to help you settle.

For Parents
1. Take pride in your son's achievement
Joining Harrow is a wonderful achievement and the beginning of an experience that will shape your son's character, interests and lifelong friendships. By choosing Harrow, you are joining a community that places boys' wellbeing, personal development and sense of belonging at the heart of School life.
2. Encourage growing independence
Summer provides an ideal opportunity to help your son develop the practical skills that underpin successful boarding. Encouraging him to take responsibility for packing, organisation and daily routines will help him arrive feeling capable and confident.
3. Familiarise yourselves with the support network
One of the great strengths of Harrow is its pastoral care. Every boy is supported by an experienced House team, including his House Master, Assistant House Master, Tutor and Matron, alongside older boys such as Shepherds and Mentors. Parents can feel reassured that their son will be known as an individual and supported every step of the way.

4. Trust the settling-in process
Almost all boys experience moments of homesickness or uncertainty in the early days. This is entirely normal and usually short-lived. Experience shows that boys settle most successfully when they become fully involved in House life, activities and friendships. Strong partnerships between home and School play an important role in this process.
5. Look forward to the journey ahead
Harrow is much more than a school: it is a community built on Courage, Honour, Humility and Fellowship, where boys are encouraged to discover their talents, develop their character and become the very best version of themselves. The months and years ahead promise to be exciting, transformative and immensely rewarding for both boys and their families.
