Photography
Photography is among the most creative and exciting departments in the school, consistently achieving the highest grades at A level. It boasts a state of the art professional lighting setup, a large traditional darkroom and a digital studio with the latest Apple Macs. Printing facilities in the studio are also impressive, with the ability to print as large as A2.
This exciting A level subject provides boys with an opportunity to study the world around them. It is through the lens that we can observe and consider the environment in which we live. Boys learn how to get the most out of using a camera as well as experimenting with different techniques including traditional black and white printing, the history of photography and digital photography using the latest computer software. Teaching is centred around practical work, although we do insist on developing a rigorous and intellectual understanding of the subject, as all photography is based on ideas and issues.
In addition to lessons, we encourage our students to extend their interest in photography beyond their school commitment by exhibiting their own work. With London in such close proximity, the department benefits greatly from excursions to galleries and exhibitions as well as regular trips abroad to cities such as New York and Los Angeles. Photographic workshops are also part of the course, with visiting professional photographers such as David Yarrow sharing their creative expertise.
