St Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach

St Matthew Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach

This year, our annual Choral Society performance fell in Holy Week: arguably the most appropriate time to perform one of the greatest pieces of Christian art ever created.
Composed in the late 1720s and not heard outside Leipzig until 1829 (when Mendelssohn conducted an abbreviated performance in Berlin), St Matthew Passion has since been performed the world over, never failing to leave performers and audience in awe of this incredible work.
Harrow School Choral Society and The Choir of Francis Holland School accompanied professional orchestra and soloists, including Daniel Auchincloss as Evangelist and Theo Platt as Christus, in their performance in March.
With thanks to Simon Page for his drawing of the evening.
