Congratulations to Harrow School Judo team, who have retained the title of Independent Schools Champions for the third successive year!
In the Junior age band, Dat Doan achieved Gold in the Over-73kg category in a thrilling all-Harrow final against Peter Peganov who finished with Silver. Orlando Closs took Gold in the Under-73kg division and Jake McDermid worked hard against much more experienced opposition to take a Bronze in the Under-46kg category.
In the Intermediate age band, Scott MacNaughton and Harry Cleeve took Silver and Bronze respectively in the Over-73kg division. Alex Leung, Caspar Gurney took bronze in the Under-73kg category, while Leung lost a close final and finished with Silver. In the Under-66kg group, Ostap Stefak won a Gold Medal while relative newcomer Will Collins earned a Gold Medal in the Under-60kg division. George Biles also finished top of the Under-55kg category adding another Gold Medal to his collection.
In the Seniors, Captain Harry Markham took Gold in the Over-90kg division, while Zayan Dhanani retired injured, with a Bronze Medal, from the Under-90kg group. In a tough Under-81kg pool Vice-Captain Toni-Fola Alade fought sensibly, progressing all the way to the final and finishing with a Silver Medal. Jamie Hill and Georgiy Ivanian fought well but did not manage to progress to the finals of the Under-73kg category.
Toni Fola-Alade was chosen as this year’s recipient of the prestigious Budokwai Cup for Best Fighting Spirit, presented to him by 1964 Judo Olympian, Anthony Sweeney.
