On the morning of Sunday 16 June, ten Harrovians took part in the Big South East Swim at Dartford Bridge in Kent.
Nearly 150 swimmers took part in this 2km open-water swimming competition, including some who are nationally-ranked. Despite limited training and experience in this discipline, Harrovians took all three places on the podium. Finishing in first place was George Rates (Newlands) in a time of 25.34. Hot on his heels and coming in four seconds later was Maxwell Brooks (West Acre). In third place was James Rates (Newlands), a Shell (Year 9 pupil).
The lakes around Dartford Bridge are some of the cleanest in the UK, and swimming in them outside of organised events is forbidden. With a water temperature of sub-23 degrees, swimmers wear specialist wetsuits to combat the cold. This was a unique experience for the Harrow swimming team.
