Arkwright Engineering Scholars

Congratulations to Oskar Bulstrode (Rendalls), Jan Kryca (Moretons), Luke Shailer (Rendalls) and Wayne Wen (The Park), who have each been awarded prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarships.

The Arkwright Engineering Scholarship programme aims to inspire and nurture school-age students to be the country’s future leaders of the engineering profession. The scholarships are awarded to high-calibre 16-year-old students through a rigorous selection process and support students through the two years of their A levels, Scottish Advanced Highers or equivalent qualifications.

To apply, candidates must write a personal statement similar to the UCAS application, take a problem-solving examination and attend an interview day at a university. They take a range of projects with them to interview, to show to the panel of three experts. The application process starts in September, with scholarships awarded at the end of the academic year, in June.

Nearly 2,000 applicants from across the UK applied for the scholarships this year; only 20% of those were successful.

Every Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is sponsored by a commercial company, trade association, university, professional institution, armed service, government organisation, worshipful company, charitable trust or personal donor. These sponsors offer different kinds of support to their scholars, e.g. hands-on work experience, support for curriculum projects and personal mentors to help with studies and career planning.
