Remembering First Wimbledon Winner

The first Wimbledon Championship began on 9 July 1877, with the gentlemen's singles the only event.

It was won by Old Harrovian Spencer Gore (Mr Bradbys 18633) from a field of 22, with around 200 spectators paying one shilling each to watch the final. Old Harrovians went on to win the next three finals: Frank Hadow (HB and Mr Watson's 18683) in 1878 and John Hartley (The Park 18623) in 1879 and 1880.

that anyone who has really played well at cricket, tennis or even rackets, will ever seriously give his attention to lawn tennis, beyond showing himself to be a promising player, is extremely doubtful .

Spencer Gore, who clearly did not foresee the popularity of tennis today!
