Tuesday, 01 May 2012

The Harrow Fencing Club has completed a second unbeaten year. In fact the Club has not lost a school match since September 2009, making Harrow one of the strongest fencing schools in the country at the moment. The highlights of the term were a victory over Eton, thus retaining the Lansdowne Challenge Trophy and the senior fencers (Kareem Cheriton-Francis, Hugo Lloyd and Joshua Henriques) competing in the English Schools’ Team competition, winning gold in the foil and bronze in the epee. The club has just returned from the Public Schools’ Fencing Championships, held at Crystal Palace. All eleven fencers who took part performed very well over three gruelling days and as a result, Harrow was awarded two team trophies: the club won the Hilary Hammond Trophy, awarded to the strongest Boys’ School with fewer than 25 weapon entries, and The Pearson Cup, awarded to the Boys’ School with the best results in all events in the Championships. Both awards give an indication of the strength of fencing at Harrow. Notable individual successes came from Kareem Cheriton-Francis, who won the Senior Epee Cup and was awarded the Master at Arms Cup for the best senior fencer in the competition, Hugo Lloyd, who came 2nd in the senior foil, Joshua Henriques, who came 3rd in both the Senior Epee and the Master at Arms competitions and Patrick Caffrey, who came eighth in the U14 Sabre.
