Boarding Life
"Relationships between boarders of all ages are excellent. They are extremely warm and this creates a sense of community that enables pupils to flourish and grow in self-confidence and self-esteem. For example, older pupils support the others whenever there is a particular need such as helping new boys to settle into the school. Co-operative teamwork is a salient feature of relationships, as observed between different year groups in the house singing rehearsals for the 'glees and twelves' competition." – 2006 Inspection Report
There are eleven boarding houses and one smaller overflow House called Gayton. Although they work harmoniously together in the context of the School as a whole, each House has its own character and atmosphere, its own conventions and customs. The division of the School into smaller units makes possible a high level of personal and pastoral care. The atmosphere in each House is happy and creative.
House Masters and their families live in the boarding houses and are assisted by House Tutors appointed from amongst the teaching staff. Every House has a residential House Tutor. The House Master keeps a watchful eye over the welfare, personal and academic, of every boy in his care; for parents he is the main point of contact with the School.
Each House has a resident Matron and sick room. The Matrons are supported by the School's Medical Centre where trained nursing staff offer twenty-four hour care. The Medical Centre is under the direct supervision of the School Doctor who is available on the Hill every day for consultation.
There are no dormitories: a boy shares his room with a boy of the same age for the first three to six terms and thereafter has a room to himself. It is very much his own place, his home for the term, where he keeps his belongings, puts up his pictures, does his work and leads much of his social life. Each House has a Common Room with newspapers, television and video. All have their own gardens and sports facilities.
