Care for the individual boy
In a boarding school it is possible to place a greater emphasis on care for the individual than can normally be feasible within the limited time available to a day school. Every boy is helped to develop to his maximum potential. Work is monitored carefully and extra help given where necessary. The many activities on offer, often in the evenings and at weekends, enable all boys to develop interests and skills. We do not aim to produce a type but rather a well rounded individual who shows both a determination to do things well together with courtesy and consideration for others.
There is a great range of activities available to occupy boys in the evenings and weekends so no boy should ever be bored. Many of the School's facilities are open during these times, including the Sports Centre, Art Schools, Design and Technology, Library and Computing suites. In addition there are organised outings every weekend and expeditions and field trips every term. Several hundred people work in the School quite apart from Masters. Boys benefit hugely from becoming part of this larger community.
We aim to teach pupils self-discipline. Standards of behaviour are expected to be high. Those who misbehave may find they lose some freedoms or privileges for a period of time. But the emphasis within the School is on encouragement. We expect our boys to do well and we take every opportunity to congratulate and reward them. High expectations and a culture of praise are, we believe, central to the success of our pupils.
The School has a carefully planned personal, social and health education programme called The Way of Life course. Our pupils attend this course together with girls from other local independent schools. A team of experienced health educators from outside the School, as well as visiting lecturers, do an outstanding job. Issues such as drugs, alcohol, families, divorce and adolescence are discussed within a moral framework.
