Scholarships at age 13
The scholarship exams are held in February or March for entry to Harrow the following September. Candidates must normally be under 14 on 1st September of that calendar year.
Scholarships are awarded for excellence in Academic work, Music, Art or for Outstanding Talent.
We are unable to accept any further applications for places for entry in 2008.
Academic Scholarships
The number of 13+ Academic Scholarships varies at the Head Master's discretion but we currently offer up to ten Scholarships which are normally set at 10% of the fees. If a boy does very well in the Scholarship but his parents cannot afford the fees (even with the Scholarship award) then a means-tested bursary is often available, up to 100% of the fees.
All applicants are interviewed. If there is any evidence of real achievement in subjects which do not form part of the Academic Scholarship exam, such as art work or products made in design technology, these should be brought to interview.
Parents should register their sons to sit the scholarship exam any time up to
the end of January in the year before entry.
Candidates must sit papers in English, Mathematics (two papers), Analytical Reasoning and at least three other subjects from the following list: Science, History, Geography, French, German, Spanish, Latin, Ancient Greek, Music. Candidates are advised to do as many papers as they are capable of doing well. Click here to view the syllabus for Academic Scholarships. Copies of recent past papers other than Analytical Reasoning (an intelligence test which cannot be prepared for) may be obtained from the Registrar.
The examination will be held at Harrow, and candidates are expected to remain at the School throughout the examination period.
All candidates will be sent full details nearer the time. They should arrive at the School for tea on the Monday and will be free to leave before lunch on the Thursday. Pupils will stay in a Harrow Boarding House on the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights where they will be looked after by the House Master and shown around by pupils.
Candidates for scholarships who, though not elected, have given adequate proof of their ability, are not required to take the Common Entrance Examination. Candidates who show sufficient promise will be found places in the School even if they have not previously been formally registered for a place in a House.

Music Scholarships
Harrow has a thriving Music Department with a strong reputation. Every year several boys win Music Scholarships and go on to play a leading role in the musical life of the School. The awards are suitable for boys who will have achieved Grade 5 Distinction on their principal instrument.
The Music Scholarship exam takes place at Harrow in late January/early February of the year of entry and completed application forms should have been received by mid-January. The requirements are:
- two contrasting pieces played on the main instrument
- ear tests
- sight-reading
- optional: one piece played on a second or third instrument or singing
- viva voce (an informal interview and aural tests)
Candidates will have the opportunity to rehearse with the accompanist before the audition.
Successful candidates are also required to meet a minimum standard in English and Mathematics equating to a pass at Common Entrance Examination level.
In addition to the general fee remission a Music Scholarship may include free tuition in two instruments or one instrument and singing.
Potential candidates for Music Scholarships whose contractual commitments to collegiate or cathedral choirs make it impossible for them to fulfil the age qualification should contact the Director of Music well in advance of the examination to discuss other possibilities.
If a boy does very well in the Scholarship but his parents cannot afford the fees (even with the Scholarship award) then a means-tested bursary can sometimes be made available.
Parents are recommended to arrange a pre-audition with the Director of Music six to twenty-four months before the awards.
For more information on Music Scholarships, contact the Director of Music, Mr David Woodcock, on 020 8872 8231 or email on dnw@harrowschool.org.uk.
Art Scholarships
Harrow has a well-equipped Art department with facilities for painting, printmaking, sculpture and pottery. The department is open every day for students to pursue their interests outside the timetable.
The Art Scholarship takes place in the February of the year of entry at the School. The requirements are:
- a drawing test lasting two hours
- a portfolio of their work which candidates should bring with them and which will be discussed with them individually.
Boys offering Art as well as applying for an Academic Scholarship can have their Art tests while they are at Harrow for the academic examinations.
The closing date for applications for 13+ Art is early February of the year of entry.

Outstanding Talent Scholarships
Up to ten awards are available for boys who can demonstrate outstanding talent in any other activities through which they would make a significant contribution to Harrow's reputation for excellence, including swimming, ball games, athletics, design technology, ICT, acting or chess. These awards range in value from 2% (the most common level) to 10% of the fees and a small number can be supplemented with a means-tested bursary up to 100% of the fee.
Applicants for the outstanding talent award must specify one, two or three activities only in which they would wish to be assessed. Each sport counts as one activity, so typical candidates might offer:
- Rugby, soccer and cricket,
- OR cricket alone,
- OR ICT alone,
- OR acting alone,
- OR swimming and acting.
Interviews for these awards will take place in late February/early March of the year of entry and candidates will be set tasks appropriate to their specific talents.
Candidates are also expected to pass the Common Entrance Examination to Harrow, or do well in the Academic Scholarship, or (if not at a UK prep school) to pass a Harrow Entrance examination.
The closing date for applications for 13+ Outstanding Talent Scholarships is early February of the year of entry.

Peter Beckwith Scholarships
The Peter Beckwith Harrow Trust was set up in 1992 by Peter Beckwith, himself an Old Harrovian who won a Middlesex Scholarship to Harrow in 1958. Peter's reasons for setting up the Scholarship are that he has always been aware of the wonderful opportunities winning the Middlesex Scholarship to Harrow opened up to him, and he wants to offer boys the chance to benefit from the opportunities which have enabled him to become the successful businessman, entrepreneur and benefactor he is today.
Peter Beckwith Trust awards scholarships which can cover up to full fees. These are available for any pupil, whether in a private or state school, who is very talented and whose parents could not afford to send them to a boarding school.
The awards are means tested (i.e. the level of the award will depend on the family income).
Parents can apply at any time - form from Tim Hersey at Harrow - but we assess every November for the following September.
