Scholarships at Harrow
We are unable to accept any further applications for places for entry in 2008.
What’s the difference between a Scholarship and a bursary?
A Scholarship is a financial award for excellence. A bursary is a means-tested award for parents who could not otherwise afford the fees. Most scholarships and bursaries are awarded in the months before a boy enters Harrow. Honorary Scholarships are sometimes given to boys after they have started at Harrow but there is no fee reduction. Bursaries are sometimes awarded to boys whose parents’ income drops after they start at the School.
The bursaries scheme at Harrow is being expanded and so scholarships can often be supplemented by a means-tested bursary of up to 100% for parents who might not otherwise be able to afford the fees.
What scholarships are available?
Up to thirty scholarships are awarded every year for academic excellence, exceptional ability in music or art, or for outstanding talent in some other field such as sport or acting. With the exception of Peter Beckwith awards, the scholarships can range in value from 5% to 10% of the fee and are held throughout a boy's time at Harrow subject to satisfactory performance. Boys may apply for more than one of the different types of scholarship, which include Academic, Music, Art, Sport and Outstanding Talent.
What are the examination requirements?
The Scholarship exams take place at Harrow, although special arrangements can be made for overseas candidates.
Pupils taking the 13+ Music, Art or Outstanding Talent Scholarships will also be expected to pass the Common Entrance Examination (our pass mark is 60%), or do well in the 13+ Academic Scholarship Examination, or (if not at a UK prep school) pass the Harrow Test.
For more information on the syllabus and requirements, click on the links in the lefthand menu for the relevant age group.
See the Important Dates table below for more information on application deadlines and examination timings.
Restricted Scholarships
The funding for two of our Scholarship schemes is restricted to a particular group; please indicate on the Scholarship Application Form if you might qualify for either or both of the following scholarships:
Kelsey Scholarships
The Kelsey Scholarships are available to the sons of Old Harrovians who could not otherwise afford the fees. The best time for candidates to apply for these awards is two years before entry to the Shell (first year, age 13) of the School, or in the year before entry for the Sixth Form. Later applications can sometimes be considered, contact Tim Hersey on 020 8872 8007 for more information. Tests for short-listed candidates for the Kelsey Scholarships will take place each January.
John Lyon’s Charity Scholarships
The John Lyon’s Charity finances scholarships and bursaries to Harrow for talented boys who live or have lived in the following London Boroughs: Barnet, Brent, Camden, City of London, Ealing, Harrow, Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster.
