Music Technology

Aims and philosophy

This course is aimed at anyone who has a keen interest in music technology, who enjoys creating and listening to different styles of music, and who wishes to extend their practical experience and understanding of music technology. The course has strong vocational potential but is also suited to a pupil who wishes to study a subject that combines scientific and technological study with artistic creativity and skills.

Curriculum

Three Areas of Study underpin work for the AS unit: 'Music from the Western Classical Tradition', 'The Development of Music Technology' and 'Popular Music and Jazz'. At A2 the Areas of Study are: 'The Development of Music Technology' and either 'Music for the Moving Image' or 'Words and Music'. Through these Areas of Study pupils learn to produce performances using sequencing software in a range of musical styles, develop the skills required to make high quality recordings of musical performances, learn how to compose and arrange using technology, develop knowledge of the principles and development of music technology and learn how to control and interpret data. In addition, pupils at AS and A2 learn to identify musical, stylistic and technological features of a wide range of popular music and jazz. The course is heavily weighted towards coursework and pupils are required to do much work independently outside of classroom time. Familiarity with and fluency in using complicated pieces of studio equipment are essential.
