Design Technology
Aims and philosophy
Our aim is to provide technology teaching for a wide range of ability levels at A, AS and GCSE levels. We see it as our purpose to foster interest in and awareness of all aspects of technological life.
Curriculum by year-group
Shell: all boys do a full year foundation course in Design Technology. The course is tailored to encourage flair and creativity. It is directed towards working with resistant materials, encouraging experience in a wide range of practical skills. Three exercises are normally undertaken, with work in plastics, metal and wood. Boys are expected to analyse, make, test and evaluate their own ideas. Comparisons are made with everyday products. Computers are used throughout the course and an introduction to Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing is presented. There is an emphasis on good graphics using a variety of media. Perspective, orthographic and isometric drawing techniques form the basis of communicating ideas in both finished and sketch format. A basic knowledge of mechanisms, materials, safety, tools and structures is taught and the development of a technical vocabulary is encouraged.
GCSE: provides an opportunity for pupils to develop an awareness of the nature and importance of engineering in society. Drawing and 3D visualisation skills are a must as well as enthusiastic interest. Existing products are studied and extensive use of IT is made in the form of computer-aided design and manufacture systems (CADCAM).
AS & A-level: A sound grasp of how to analyse existing products and practices, and the ability to use this knowledge to develop their own products, is important. Therefore candidates need to be able to visualise and communicate shapes and spatial relationships.
Outside the classroom
Technology Week takes place just before half-term in the Spring term. We also hold an annual inter-House technology competition, designed to stimulate inventive thinking as well as for competitive fun. Industrial visits are organised regularly to commercial factories and workshops.
