Biology
Aims and philosophy
This is a very broad subject and it is hoped that the introductory year will reflect this whilst also giving pupils an opportunity to see how interesting and relevant Biology is in the modern world. We will try to introduce some practical techniques such as microscopy and dissection as well as the opportunity to do whole-organism experiments with invertebrates. Boys are encouraged to exploit the School's other biology-related activities such as the conservation group and Natural History Society.
Curriculum by year-group
In the Shell year all pupils are offered an introductory course which covers a number of topics, many of which are related to health education.
GCSE: The Remove year starts by continuing the human physiology started in the Shells, which includes diet, digestion and reproduction. The Summer term is spent studying plants and ecology. More advanced topics such as control systems, homeostasis and genetics are saved for the Fifth Form. The coursework, which takes the form of an assessed practical is done in the Autumn term of the Fifth Form.
AS: "Molecules, Cells and Systems" considers some of the underlying principles of Biology, and covers topics such as cells and their organelles, methods for studying cells (such as microscopy), enzymes and the physiology of the heart and lung. "Making use of Biology" looks at ways that Biology can influence our everyday lives in areas such as agriculture and medicine and covers topics as diverse as manipulating reproduction in farm animals, genetic engineering and enzyme biotechnology. Practical skills will be assessed on at least one occasion during the course of the year.
A-level: "Inheritance, Evolution and Ecosystems" provides the opportunity to attend a three-day residential field trip in Devon to study different habitats, and also looks at genetics and evolution. "Physiology and the Environment" concerns organisms' adaptation to their environment.
Outside the classroom
The department is able to make use of the School's excellent seven-acre conservation area, and a group of boys regularly take part in its management. Many of the Biology teachers have expertise in Natural History, marine biology etc. and the department thus offers many exciting expeditions and outings. In past years, expeditions to Iran, Lapland, Malaysia, Borneo, Tioman Island, Singapore, Namibia and Botswana have been organised and have been much enjoyed by pupils, as well as offering a fantastic opportunity to learn in the field. There is a School farm with a herd of longhorn cattle and boys are encouraged to visit and help out with the work.
