Margrave Of The Marshes by John Peel & Sheila Ravenscroft

This biography of John Peel was started as an autobiography but, sadly after his untimely death in October 2004, was finished by his wife. It includes the first part of John Peel's life in great and humorous detail, all from John Peel's hand, and the latter part of the book gives an intimate portrait of John Peel's life and work. Not many people become legends in their own lifetime, so reading this biography is a must for all who want an insight into one of the shapers of British popular culture.

The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly

The reader is carried along by an outrageously melodramatic plot: the story is set in London and New York of the 1880s. In London, the poor and oppressed struggle to make ends meet while New York offers more opportunities for the enterprising. This is a rags to riches story for tea packer Fiona and costermonger Joe, whose frustrated romance remains unresolved until almost the last page. Brew a large pot of tea, sit back and enjoy!

The Hundred Secret Senses by Amy Tan

Olivia is a Chinese-American whose life is turned upside down by her Chinese half sister Kwan. Kwan sees the ghosts of her ancestors and links the present with past lives. Both humorous and moving, this is a beautifully written book.

The Times Book of Quotations

Although there are many quotation dictionaries in the world to enjoy, I like this one the best because it's so easy to use. The topics, or themes, are listed in a traditional dictionary format and the appropriate quotes are under each theme in order of the author. This simplistic approach allows for ease when searching, and therefore faster results. It's a great reference book for your own collection and also perfect as a gift.
