The School's Purpose

Media Elements

Conscious of its history, culture and the charitable intentions of the founder, Harrow responds to the demands of change by preparing boys for a life of leadership, service and personal fulfilment. Academic achievement is foremost amongst Harrow’s goals which also promote independence of thought, respect for others, creativity and responsibility within a broad range of activities. Above all, Harrow inspires boys to develop their talents and reach for excellence in everything they do. The School’s purpose is thus to provide an excellent education for boys, supporting them in their passage to adulthood by developing character, intellect and physical fitness within a happy and scholarly community in which each boy is cared for and valued equally.

We strive to achieve this by:

  • encouraging the growth of intellectual curiosity, creativity and habits of learning through a broadly based, coherent and balanced curriculum;
  • achieving very good examination results relative to the ability of the individual pupils; encouraging a love of learning for its own sake; achieving a good record of entry to the best universities; and ensuring pupils leave in full possession of skills which will be important at university and beyond;
  • ensuring that boarding is fun and gives our pupils advantages not available to day pupils;
  • providing strongly committed staff who have high expectations of pupils, who are enthusiastic about their subject and who enable boys to enjoy their education;
  • encouraging the development in every boy of self-discipline, responsibility, spiritual values and a personal and moral code, leading to high standards of behaviour, consideration for others and a pride in himself and the School;
  • presenting every boy with the opportunity to experience a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including music, art, DT, drama and games, and to receive the highest possible level of specialist tuition or coaching in his chosen interests;
  • and promoting an understanding of higher education and career possibilities, an awareness of the world outside the School, and a sense of service to the wider community.

During a boy's time at Harrow we aim to:

  • develop him as a whole person;
  • inculcate in him a desire for truth, honesty and respect for others;
  • ensure he has equality of opportunity;
  • respect his right to privacy and foster in him a respect for other people’s privacy and possessions;
  • develop his feelings of responsibility for himself, others and the environment;
  • develop his leadership qualities, sense of service and his ability to work as part of a team;
  • and encourage him to lead a healthy lifestyle and help him address issues related to smoking, illegal drugs, alcohol, sex and relationships with others.

Within each House and in the School as a whole we aim to:

  • create an atmosphere of positive encouragement which will promote his intellectual, spiritual, cultural, moral and social growth and where aiming for and achieving excellence is respected and admired;
  • foster an open and trusting ethos where he feels able to approach any other member of the School (boy or adult) confident that he will be treated and respected as an individual;
  • develop an atmosphere of tolerance, openness and trust in which he and the other boys reject ill-judged teasing, harassment and bullying;
  • safeguard and promote his welfare in an environment which is, as far as possible, safe from physical hazards and dangers; and
  • acknowledge the importance of his links with his parents as an indispensable part of his support and development.
