The first photograph ever produced on paper in 1840 was created by William Henry Fox Talbot, an old boy of Harrow. This invention has developed into the different processes we use today. Photography is offered both as a hobby and as a subject which can be taken to A-level.
Photography is a very popular A-level subject with an extremely high percentage of pupils achieving grade A. There are currently 40 pupils at AS and A2-level.
This busy and thriving department is generously equipped with a darkroom containing 10 black and white 35 mm enlargers, a studio shooting space with daylight-balanced lighting, a comprehensive library and a computer suite with Apple Mac computers running the latest Adobe Photoshop software.
Boys follow the Edexcel exam board at AS and A2-level. The Photography Studio is open in the afternoons and some weekends for the boys to develop their learning.
A large proportion of the teaching is centred around practical work, although we do insist on developing an intellectual understanding of the subject. There are numerous photographic shoots in London and opportunities to visit current exhibitions by professional photographers. Study visits abroad are also encouraged to support the boys' work in the department.
Pupils' work is regularly exhibited around the School. The department holds exhibitions in the newly opened Pasmore Gallery, the Gallery outside the Shepherd Churchill Dining Hall and in the School's main Reception.
