Aims and philosophy

Physical Education is a multi-disciplinary course readily equated with Human Biology, has a rigorous psychology component, and treats historical and contemporary global issues in depth. This course allows students who enjoy sport to develop their all-round knowledge of the subject whilst pursuing an academic course to which they can relate.

Curriculum by year-group

The AS-level course units cover the social basis of sport and recreation from an historical and contemporary viewpoint. The enhancing performance element looks at how we acquire skill and this requires two pieces of coursework plus a practical assessment. The improvement of physical performance looks at the theoretical aspects of fitness and then expects pupils to apply these through personal performance.

A-level: looks at global trends in international sport through other cultures; refining performance of the individual, and the scientific principles of exercise and performance.

Outside the classroom

Major games played are rugby (Autumn term), Harrow Football and soccer (Spring term) and cricket (Summer term). We have over 20 teams in each sport at every age and level of ability and there are fixtures against other schools at least every week plus regular inter-House competitions. The School has produced several players of international standard in recent years. There are about thirty other sports or games played regularly so there should be something to interest every boy, and if there is not, he will be supported in developing a new activity.
