Aims and philosophy

The course can be studied with benefit by students following a practical art course, by science students who wish to broaden their background, and by students of any of the humanities. We make full use of London's museums, so that wherever possible our studies are focussed around works that can be seen at firsthand.

Curriculum by year-group

AS: pupils will learn how to use the methods and terms of art history to make informed comment on works of art from Greek and Roman antiquity to the Gothic era and on art, architecture and design from c. 1850.

A-level: at A-level we study the Early Renaissance in Florence and art in eighteenth and nineteenth century France.

Outside the classroom

Visits to galleries and exhibitions in London take place regularly and there are annual trips to Florence and Paris. The Pasmore Art Society and Summerson Art History Society invite visiting speakers to the School.
