Heads of Subject

Laurence Hedges Director of Art
Laurence took his Foundation course at the University for the Creative Arts, graduated with First Class Honours in Fine Art from the University of Plymouth, and studied as a postgraduate at Wimbledon College of Art, where he won the Julian Trevelyan prize for printmaking. After a period of lecturing, he took teaching posts at Sharnbrook Upper School, Dauntsey’s School, Bromsgrove School and Wellington College. Laurence is a visiting A-level moderator for Edexcel, has co-written two International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme books, and has taken courses at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
Nick Keylock Head of Biology
Nick read Natural Sciences, specialising in Zoology, at Clare College, Cambridge. He first taught at Magdalen College School before studying for an MSc in Environmental Technology at Imperial College London, where his thesis was on The Importance of Hunting for Bushmeat to a Rural Community in Equatorial Guinea. Nick has taught at Bristol Grammar School and Radley College, and is a fellow of the Zoological Society of London.
Tom Knight Head of Design and Technology
Tom read Product Design at the University of Hertfordshire and gained a PGCE from Homerton, Cambridge, before joining Harrow.
Adam Cross Director of Drama
Adam studied at the University of York, King’s College, London, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Having worked at theatres including the National, Shakespeare’s Globe and the Liverpool Everyman, he started his teaching career at Eton College. Before joining Harrow, he was Director of Drama at King’s College School, Wimbledon. He has also been an external examiner for EDEXCEL, and a trustee of the Polka Theatre.
Chris Pollitt Head of Economics
Chris read Economics and Management at Worcester College, Oxford and began his teaching career at St Edward’s School. He is a member of the Royal Economic Society and is a subject examiner. He has a particular interest in Public Economics, especially the role of government in the health and education sectors.
Dr Joanna Bratten Head of English
Joanna received a BA in Drama from Franciscan University in the USA before pursuing a MLitt in Shakespeare and a PhD on developments in the British novel between the wars at the University of St Andrews. She taught English and Drama at Charterhouse and was Director of Extra-Curricular at The Cheltenham Ladies’ College before arriving at Harrow.
Simon Sampson Head of Geography
Simon graduated from Edinburgh University with First Class Honours in Geography, before completing a PGCE at Jesus College, Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, an author for Oxford University Press (contributing articles for their GeoActive series and new A-level textbooks) and an OCR A-level specification writer and assessor.
Andy Todd Head of History
Andy was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read History and Anglo-Saxon, Norse & Celtic, before completing an MPhil in Early Medieval History. His chief historical interests lie in the Anglo-Saxon period, on which he has written for the Dictionary of National Biography and the Reader’s Guide to British History.
Dr Christopher O’Mahony Director of ICT
Christopher’s doctoral thesis concerned the evolution and evaluation of information systems in Australian schools throughout the 1990s, and his subsequent research has encompassed staff ICT competence, organisational culture, ICT strategy and virtual learning environments. He is an active member of the Australian Computer Society and the IFIP Working Group 3.7 – Information Technology for Educational Management, and has held previous ICT management positions in Bath, Uppingham and Sydney.
James Ashton Head of Mathematics
 

James achieved a first class honours degree in Mathematics from Royal Holloway, University of London, and a Distinction in Part III Mathematics from Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He has lectured at UCL and taught at Ipswich School, Forest School and Norwich school, where he was also Head of Mathematics.
Henry Johnson Head of Modern Languages


Henry read Modern and Medieval Languages at Girton College, Cambridge, where he enjoyed specialising in the works of Goethe in his final year, and was also a Choral Scholar. After completing a PGCE teaching German and French, Henry was a Head of Department at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys in Canterbury and a House Master at Stonyhurst College.
David Woodcock Director of Music
David was a chorister (under Dr Allan Wicks) and later Cathedral Organ Scholar at Canterbury Cathedral, before he went up to Cambridge as Organ Scholar at Queens’ College, where he directed Queens’ College Chapel Choir, the St Margaret Society Chorus and Orchestra, and the Gentleman of St John’s. He was Director of Music at Oakham School before joining Harrow, and has held various positions in The Royal College of Organists and on several national Music education committees. He occasionally sings with the Tallis Scholars and the Choir of the English Concert, and has given organ recitals around the world.
Darren Bell Head of Photography
Darren read Fine Art at the University of Ulster, Belfast, and completed a PGCE at Goldsmiths University, London. He was Head of Art at The John Lyon School before joining the teaching staff at Harrow in 2008. He serves as an external examiner for GCE Art and Design.  
Christian Penhale Head of Chemistry
   Christian graduated in Chemistry from the College of St Hild and St Bede, Durham University and taught at Oundle School and Deacons Academy before serving as an Examiner for both OCR A Level and Edexcel IGCSE. As Harrow School’s Head of External Examinations, he gleaned an overview of whole-school operation before transitioning to run the Chemistry Department. He was previously Assistant House Master of The Knoll. Christian is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) and a fellow of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (FRSA). He is the founder of a new local school, Saint Jérôme Bilingual, responsible for establishing the educational partnership with Harrow School.
Richard Harvey Head of Theology and Philosophy
Richard read Theology at the University of Durham, completed a PGCE at the University of Cambridge, and then worked at Trinity School, Croydon, before joining Harrow. He has been an examiner for Edexcel and OCR.
Dr Steven Kennedy Head of Classics
Steven read Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, Classics at the University of Victoria, was awarded an MA in Theology by the University of Exeter, where he continued his studies in the Classics Department and was later awarded his PhD in Classical Philosophy, where he wrote his thesis on Cicero’s reception of Greek philosophy. Steven later read Biblical Hebrew at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and Classical Arabic at SOAS and the University of Bethlehem. He began he career at the Maynard School before arriving at Harrow. He has a broad interest in linguistics, and teaches Latin, Greek, Ancient History and has offered electives in Biblical Hebrew and Quranic Arabic. Steven is a lead examiner for GCSE Latin, sits as a board member on the Hellenic Society, has given several papers at the Classical Association and has most recently contributed a chapter on Plato’s Apology to the new Bloomsbury OCR Greek Anthology.
Alastair Cook Head of Politics

Alastair read History at the University of Exeter and Pembroke College, Oxford. Before joining Harrow in 2015 to teach History and Politics, Alastair taught at Malvern College and St Edward’s School, Oxford. Alastair was appointed to the post of Head of Politics in 2017.
