Richard C Compton DL (West Acre 1970³)
An Old Harrovian and past parent, Richard Compton was High Sheriff for North Yorkshire in the year 2010-11. He is the owner of Newby Hall, a stately home in North Yorkshire which is open to the general public. In 2009 he was made the Deputy President of the Historic Houses Association. Richard has been Chairman of the Governors since September 2008.
William G S Massey QC, MA (The Knoll 1967²)
An Old Harrovian and past parent, William Massey is a leading tax barrister, with a practice covering all areas of personal and corporate taxation. He specialises in tax appeals and other tax-related litigation, and covers private client, estate planning, heritage property and agricultural property. William has been Deputy Chairman of the Governors from September 2008 and is Chairman of the General Purposes Committee. He is also a Governor of Summer Fields School.
John A Strachan BSc FRICS
A past parent, John Strachan is a Chartered Surveyor and Head of Global Retail at Cushman and Wakefield, one of the world’s largest firms of real estate advisors. John is Chairman of the Works and Buildings Committee.
John F R Hayes MA FCA (Moretons 1962²)
An Old Harrovian and past parent, John Hayes is a management consultant, currently with Hampden Insurance. John was previously a partner at PWC Consulting and IBM UK Limited. John is Chairman of The John Lyon School Board of Governors. He is also Chairman of The John Lyon School’s Finance and General Purposes Committee.
Simon J Doggart BA
Simon Doggart is Headmaster of Caldicott School, a prep school from which many boys go on to Harrow. Previously Simon was a teacher at Eton College. Simon is the Governor responsible for Child Protection and Safeguarding.
Vernon L Sankey MA FRSA (The Park 1962³)
An Old Harrovian and past parent, Vernon Sankey is a leading businessman and currently the Chairman of the Swiss company Firmenich. He was a past CEO of Reckitt & Colman (now Reckitt Benckiser). He has previously been a member of the Boards of several companies, including Pearson plc, Taylor Woodrow plc and he currently sits on the Board of Directors of Atos Origin and Zurich Financial Services. He is an adviser to UK and international companies. Vernon is Chairman of Harrow School Enterprises Limited.
Prof David J Womersley MA PhD FBA FRHS
Professor David Womersley is the Thomas Warton Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford, and has been a Professorial Fellow of St Catherine’s, Oxford since 2002. Previously, David was a Fellow and Tutor in English at Jesus College, Oxford. David’s research on English literature, historical drama and the history of literary criticism covers the period from the 16th to the 19th century. David is the University of Oxford’s nominee Governor. He assists with the School’s relationships with the universities.
Mrs Jane Forman Hardy LLB
Jane works for the family business, is a qualified solicitor, magistrate, Governor of St Andrew’s Healthcare and is on the Independent Monitoring Board at Nottingham Prison. She was previously on The Parole Board, the Mental Health Act Commission and Rampton Hospital Advisory Committee. Jane was also a Director of English Touring Opera and served on the Council of Nottingham University, becoming Pro-Chancellor of the University from 2004-2008, receiving an Honorary Doctor of Laws in 2010. Jane had two sons at Harrow and is married to an Old Harrovian. She is a member of the John Lyon’s Charity Grants Committee.
C H St J Toby Hoare (Newlands 19741)
An Old Harrovian and past parent, Toby Hoare is the Executive Chairman of J Walter Thompson, part of WPP plc. Toby monitors the School’s marketing and external communications and is Chairman of the External Affairs Committee.
Kevin W B Gilbert BA FCA
A past parent, Kevin Gilbert is a retired accountant. He was a partner of PriceWaterhouseCoopers and is now a member of several Harrow committees. Kevin is a Director of Harrow International Schools Limited, chairs the Harrow School Foundation Audit Forum, and is also a Governor of The John Lyon School.
Edward J H Gould MA
Edward Gould was an Assistant Master at Harrow from 1967-1983, Head of Geography from 1974-1979 and House Master from 1979-1983. He then became Headmaster of Felsted School and in 1993, he was appointed Headmaster of Marlborough College where he served until 2004. He also serves on the governing bodies of other schools. Edward is Chairman of Harrow International Schools Limited.
R Crispin W Odey BA (Druries 19711)
An Old Harrovian and current Harrow parent, Crispin Odey is the founder of Odey Asset Management which he established in 1991. He also heads Odey European Inc. Prior to founding Odey, Crispin managed the Baring European Growth Trust and Continental European Pension Funds at Barings Asset Management and Framlington Fund Managers. Crispin is Chairman of the Investments Committee and the John Lyon’s Charity Management Committee.
Harriet S Crawley BA
A mother, sister and daughter of Old Harrovians, Harriet Crawley has worked in television, founded her own art business and stood twice as a Conservative candidate. She speaks five languages and has written four books. Today she is an art and public relations consultant, working mainly in Russia. Harriet runs the Crawley Gap Year Scholarship in memory of her two brothers, Andrew and Randall.
John P Batting MA FFA (The Park 1972²)
An Old Harrovian and past parent, John Batting is a Pension Scheme Actuary and the Chief Executive Officer of Punter Southall Limited. John read Mathematics at Cambridge University prior to his actuarial training and professional studies with Sedgwick Employee Benefits in 1980. He then set up BGJ & Co Ltd in 1993, which merged with Punter Southall in 2002. John became CEO in 2004. John is Chairman of the Harrow Association.
Prof Graham Furniss BA PhD FBA
Professor Graham Furniss is Pro-Director at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. Graham writes on African oral and written literatures and is a specialist in the Hausa language of West Africa. He is a Commissioner of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and a past President of the African Studies Association of the UK. He chairs the British Academy’s Africa Panel, and is a Trustee of the Britain-Nigeria Educational Trust. Graham has written five books, regularly contributes chapters to books, and writes published articles. Graham is the Masters’ Representative Governor.
Matthew K Fosh BA MSI (The Head Master’s 1971²)
An Old Harrovian and current Harrow parent, Matthew Fosh has been the Group Chief Executive of Novae Group plc since joining in November 2002 and he serves as a member of the Council of Lloyd’s. Matthew was previously a fund manager before co-founding his own company, Seagray Fosh Futures Limited in 1989. He was also an England Under-19 rugby and cricket international. Matthew is Chairman of the Harrow Development Trust.
Professor Sir David Wallace CBE FRS FREng
Sir David Wallace is Master of Churchill College, Cambridge and was Director of the Isaac Newton Institute of Mathematical Sciences at Cambridge from 2006 to 2011. David completed undergraduate and postgraduate study at the University of Edinburgh before continuing research as a Harkness Fellow at Princeton University. He then lectured at the University of Southampton, and was appointed Professor at the University of Edinburgh. For twelve years from 1994 he was Vice Chancellor of Loughborough University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, and has held several honorary positions including Treasurer and Vice-President of The Royal Society and President of The Institute of Physics. In 1996 Sir David was awarded a CBE for services to parallel computing, and in 2004 was knighted for services to UK science, technology and engineering. He is The Royal Society’s nominated Governor.
The Hon Robert J Orr-Ewing (Elmfield 1967²)
An old Harrovian, Robert Orr-Ewing is the Head of the Leasehold Reform Department and Partner at Knight Frank LLP. He was a non-executive Director of HACAS Group plc and a Director of Eagle Star. Robert has been a Barrister, Proprietor of Property Letting Co, and Councillor for Kensington and Chelsea. Robert is the Estates Governor of John Lyon’s Charity.
Mrs Susan Whiddington BA
A past parent, Susan Whiddington is the founding Director of Mousetrap Theatre Projects, a theatre education charity dedicated to creating opportunities for disadvantaged young people to attend London theatre supported by a range of education programmes. Susan is also an Advisory Board Member for “Facing History” and “Ourselves”, an organisation that trains teachers to engage students of diverse backgrounds in the examination of racism and prejudice. Previously, Susan was the Development Officer of the Society of London Theatre (1989 - 1997). She is also a past Chair of Democrats Abroad UK and was a delegate at the 1992 and 1996 Democratic Conventions. Susan was formerly a Governor at the Canberra School in the Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham. Since September 2008, Susan has served as a Governor with responsibilities for Pastoral Care, Health & Safety and the Medical Centre. She is also Chairman of the Grants Committee of John Lyon’s Charity.

Dominic Crehan is Principal and Headmaster of St Helen’s College, a co-ed IAPS prep school in Hillingdon. He is an ISI inspector and a Governor of The John Lyon School.
Vice Admiral George M Zambellas DSC BSc(Hons) FRAeS
George Zambellas is Vice-Admiral and Deputy Commander-in-Chief Fleet and Chief of Staff Navy Command Headquarters, assuming the role and responsibilities of Chief Naval Warfare Officer. With effect from 6th January 2012, George will be Admiral and Commander-in-Chief Fleet and Commander Allied Maritime Command Northwood. He will also be Vice Admiral of the United Kingdom. George joined the Royal Navy in 1980 and qualified as a pilot in 1982. In 2002 he was Principal Staff Officer to two Chiefs of the Defence Staff, and by 2006 he was a Rear Admiral and Chief of Staff (Transformation). By 2007 George was Commander of the United Kingdom Maritime Force and by October 2008, Chief of Staff (Operations) at the UK’s permanent Joint Headquarters.
Charles Stonehill MA (Newlands 1970²)
An Old Harrovian, Charles Stonehill is resident in the United States where he was, until recently, Chief Finance Officer of Better Place, an electric car company. He is a founding partner of a New York based advisory firm, Green & Blue Advisors, which works with companies which develop and utilise renewable energy. He is also a Board member of Julius Baer AG, a Swiss private bank. For more than 30 years, Charles has commuted between the United States and the United Kingdom in various senior positions in the investment banking industry.
Anthony McClaran BA FCMI
Anthony McClaran is Chief Executive of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA), and an Old Lyonian. From 2003 to 2009 he was Chief Executive of UCAS, following a number of posts in university administration. Anthony has been a Governor of The John Lyon School since 2009 and is Chairman of its Strategy Committee.
Professor Paul Binski MA PhD, FBA, FSA (The Park 1970³)
An Old Harrovian, Paul Binski is Professor of History of Medieval Art in Cambridge University and a Fellow of Gonville and Caius. A Fellow of the British Academy, he writes about art and architecture, including medieval art, from a number of perspectives. He is a keen musician, having acquired the habits of painting and musicianship while a boy at Harrow. Paul is Cambridge University’s nominated Governor.
