The Scientific Society is open to any boy in the School.
High profile speakers visit the School to talk on their work and topics of current interest and we aim to cover all the main branches of science and technology in the course of each year. The annual Rayleigh Lecture is a high point when the visiting speaker is usually of international standing, for example, Lord Todd, President of the Royal Society.
Visits to museums such as South Kensington, hospitals like nearby Northwick Park and research centres including Rutherford Appleton Laboratory are part of the annual programme. Boys are taken to scientific lectures at London venues such as The Royal Institution and all boys at Harrow prepare and present a lecture to their division on a topic of their own choice, with the best ones presenting to the Science Society for an annual Prize.
For boys interested in Engineering we run teams as part of the Engineering Education Scheme (EES) in the Lower Sixth. Boys in the Upper Sixth are supported in independent investigations which may be submitted for an AS Extended Project. National competitions such the Chemistry and Physics Olympiads and a Medical Essay Competition are encouraged: a Harrow Master is Chairman of the British Chemistry Olympiad Committee.
